First 3 days in Reykjavik over Easter: stayed at Room With a View (cool and confused), the city: quiet, compact, quirky, pricey, Brain Police, rock bands with beards and bellies, very drunk people, friendly, big fleamarket, overpriced second hand clothes stores, cool boutiques, great burger at Hotel 101, loud partying and drunkeness starting at midnight and going on until 6am, buying pizza at 4am, amazing Goan restaurant Indian Mango, hot dogs from a wagon at the harbour called Bæjarins Bestu Pylsur, tranquil contemporary art gallery, great Superheroes exhibition by Erró, fog fog and more fog, watching lots of DVDs on a rainy Easter Sunday evening, pale people, fascinating dark epic sculptures at the Einar Jonsson museum, did the Golden Circle - Geysir, Gulfoss, þingvellir - AMAZING - potholes, snow and gravel roads!!!

Who talks and understands English in the EU?? Wikipedia knows:

English is the most widely known language apart from the mother tongue, this being particularly the case in Sweden (89%), Malta (an ex-British colony that ia also part of the Commonwealth of Nations as well) (88%), the Netherlands (87%), and Denmark (86%), while German and French is so in three countries. Moreover, the citizens of the EU think they speak English at a better level than any other second or foreign language. 77% of EU citizens believe that children should learn English and that it's considered the number one language to learn in all countries where the research conducted but the United Kingdom, Ireland and Luxembourg.

All in all, English either as a mother tongue or as a second/foreign language is spoken by 51% of EU citizens, followed by German with 32% and French with 28% of those asked.

With the enlargement of the European Union, the balance between French and German is slowly changing. Clearly more citizens in the new Member States master German (23% compared with 12% in the EU15) while their skills in French and Spanish are scarce (3% and 1% respectively compared with 16% and 7% among the EU15 group). A notable exception is Romania, where 24% of the population speaks French as a foreign language compared to 6% who speaks German as a foreign language (also 4% of the population speaks Italian as a foreign language, while 3% of the population speaks Spanish as a foreign language).

Rise Of The Machines

Boston Dynamics keeps working on their BigDog quadruped robot, which will probably grow to be the future AT-AT of the Pentagon. Its evolution since the last time you could see it on youtube is nothing short of mindblowing, and very spooky.

It looks like an actual biological quadruped. Seeing it climb through rubble, snow, jumping over obstacles like a wild goat, and saving a near-fall on iced ground at the last second (fast forward to the middle of the video) defies belief. It feels so "animal" that I almost feel bad when they hit it to demonstrate how it regains balance on its own.

The new version of the robot can now carry 340 pounds, which is almost triple the previous weight.

So, what is it good for? Rescuing refugees from war zones? Helping to get equipment up to Mount Everest base camps? Provide, equipped with next generation solar cells, clean transport in rural areas?

Erm.. no.

With titan legs, new generation kevlar armor, heat seeking devices, a ray gun, rocket launcher & a high power machine gun these little buggers will be able to destroy Everything Anywhere on land.

Train Spotter

It's a Jet! It's a Train! It's M-497!!! The first Jet-Powered train from 1966.

Don Wetzel and his crew adapted two General Electric J-47-19 jet engines, which had been designed as boosters for the Convair B-36 intercontinental bomber. These were mounted just above the engineer’s station at the front of the car. Wetzel’s original design had the jet engines at the rear, but this changed after his wife, making her point with some sketches on a dinner napkin, suggested that the locomotive would look better with them mounted up front. This switch also helped keep the nose of the locomotive on the tracks. The Cleveland shop fashioned a black streamlined cowling for the front of the Budd car, which was designated M-497. Workers called it the Black Beetle.

On July 23, 1966, Wetzel, the chief pilot, wearing a jet pilot’s helmet emblazoned with the New York Central logo, opened up the GE jets and sent the M-497 rolling. According to Wetzel,“We were just holding on. It was a ride!” With Alfred E. Perlman in the copilot’s seat and other N.Y.C. executives on board, movie cameras posted at milepost 347+13 recorded the M-497 flashing by at 183.85 miles per hour, a U.S. rail-speed record that stands to this day.

The M-497 tests were meant “to determine how we can best serve the needs of the traveling public for fast, reliable and less-costly intercity transportation, and, at the same time, combat the rising trend of our passenger deficit which is threatening the continuation of all rail passenger services.” Shortly after the tests the New York Central was abandoning conventional passenger service on routes longer than 200 miles—including such storied trains as the 20th Century Limited, the Wolverine, and the Empire State Express—to concentrate on fast intercity service on shorter runs. In view of the current sorry state of high-speed intercity rail service in the United States, one can only wish that the New York Central’s experiment had been either less bold or less experimental.
